Cuddly Cthulhu with Free Pattern!

Welcome one and all to the 200th post at Cthulhu Crochet and Cousins. Thank you everyone for being here, especially those of you who are long time readers of the blog, and especially those of you who have taken the time to post comments or share pictures of things you've made with my patterns.

I've always told myself that I'd keep the blog going as long as it was still fun (and didn't start to feel like work) Now, here we are at 200 posts, 330,486 visitors (the current count while I'm typing this) and it's still fun!

I wanted to go back to the beginning and do something special for this landmark post, so I decided it was time to revisit cthulhu patterns. Don't get me wrong, I love my previous incarnations of cthulhu, but I've always wanted to try for one with a more pear shaped head. Something a bit more accurate to illustrations I've seen such as this one. I also wanted the new design to be a bit bigger so that you could pick cthulhu up and give him a hug, hence the name Cuddly Cthulhu! I'm really happy with the way this one turned out and I hope that you all will enjoy him too.

As always, feel free to post a comment or send us an email if you have any questions about the pattern, or if you want to share pictures of your own Cuddly Cthulhu. Thanks again to everyone for stopping by.

Cuddly Cthulhu Pattern

Materials

Size F (3.75mm) crochet hook
1 skein worsted weight yarn. You may wish to use a contrasting colour or darker shade for the wings. (Sample was made using Vanna’s Choice Kelly Green for the body and Vanna’s Choice Olive for the wings.)
Quilt batting (or your preferred stuffing material)
Two 15mm safety eyes

(2010/10/22 - Note: I was remaking the Cuddly Cthulhu a few days ago and realized that the head instructions were less than accurate. Some lines were missing causing the head to come out much stubbier than I had intended. Following the directions in the pattern will now result in a cthulhu head that looks much more like the one in the sample pictures I've posted here.

The head directions have now been changed from Rnd 8 onwards to the end of the head. Sorry for any inconvenience this edit causes. If you prefer the cthulhu with a stubbier head, work the head directions below omitting rounds 8,9,10,11, and 18.)

I love that pattern! I will be adding it to my queue. :) BTW, where did you get that cute heart with the love on it? My last name is LoveKing and I am always looking for cute stuff with my name. Or at least part of my name. :)

amber said...

Hi Becky, Thanks for commenting. I'm glad you like the pattern. The heart is something that a friend told me is called a "brad" and it's used in scrapbooking. Readers can correct me if I'm wrong. It has two metal prongs on the back that can be bent in opposite directions to secure the brad onto a piece of paper or in this case, crochet.

I bought these particular brads a couple years ago at a Dollarama store around Valentine's Day. I checked and there's no company name or website on the package. If you're looking for similar items, you might want to try browsing the scrapbooking isle at local craft stores and dollar stores. I know I've seen some in other shapes and sizes with the word Love on them at my local Michael's before. Good luck!

Chelona said...

Thanks! I never thought of using scrap book brads! Not exactly "child friendly", but heck, most of my crochet isn't for gifts anyway.

Thanks again!

The pattern worked up great. My only issue was that on the head, and the body there is a repeated round number (round 3 and 5 on the head, and round 3 on the body) which made it a little difficult to keep track of where I was. I also edited the wings a little and used 10 hdc instead of the aprox. 8 dc to finish off the wings. Overall I am very happy with how it turned out. Kudos on the great pattern, I will definitely be making this again. <3

Hi Kit, thanks for the feedback. I've fixed the typos in the pattern. (That's what happens when you use cut and paste...oops!) I'd love to see your Cuddly Cthulhu. If you post a picture online, leave a comment with the link. Glad you enjoyed the pattern!

Amber, I actually took photos as soon as I finished him.

http://tinyurl.com/KitCthulhu1 He apparently likes raspberry jam... http://tinyurl.com/KitCthulhu2 And root beer, he was using the cheese as a step up. http://tinyurl.com/KitCthulhu3 And he found a friend.

I will definitely be making this cutie again, at least twice, once for myself (as the blue one is a gift for the gal who sent me a link to the pattern) and one as a housewarming gift. Again, kudos on the fantastic pattern!

Thanks for that. I really needed some tips how to crochet Cthulhu wings. I'm going to try when I have time. I hope I can do it - I have some problems with crocheting from such 'descriptions' with letters and numbers (especially in English - it's not my first language), I prefer picture diagrams. But I will try, it can't be very difficult ;)

Unknown said...

This is so awesome! This one definitely looks more cthulhu-ish. So adorable and snuggable (I think I just invented a word). I started crocheting him just now, but I unraveled it after the tentacle round because the head was not perfectly rounded. Where the decrease rounds met with the three sc around rounds, the head became uneven so it looked like he had an afro. I want it to be a perfect incline downward like in the picture.

I think I may have my tension too tight on the decrease rounds. Do you use the "back loop only" method of decrease, or a different method? Also, it looks like you may crochet clockwise. I crochet counter-clockwise. Perhaps this has some impact on the pear shape of the head? Maybe tomorrow I will try the other method of decrease, but I do get terribly large holes between stitches when I use that method. Any advice?

Muchos Gracias.

amber said...

Hi Traci, yes I'm also using the back loop only method of decreasing. I had to think about it for a minute, but yes, I am crocheting clockwise. I'm left handed so maybe it has something to do with that?

Did you try putting stuffing in your uneven head at all? I find that sometimes a piece that seems a bit off will look better once it has some stuffing in it and can be shaped a bit.

Good luck with the retry, and send a picture link when you get your Cuddly Cthulhu finished. I'm looking forward to seeing more of them.

Unknown said...

I started crocheting him a second time and the same odd shape started to happen with the head, but I continued crocheting in hopes that it would look better with stuffing. After I placed the safety eyes, I realized what I had done wrong BOTH times I crocheted him. I skipped the ninth row completely, so it looked strange. I couldn't unravel since the eyes were already in place. Couldn't start anew since I made him all red by request, and have no more red eyes.

I had to really stuff the head to make it a good shape. After that, I just went back to the Tiny Cthulhu page and completed the body and wings with that pattern (request of the recipient who wanted a small desk cthulhu rather than a larger one). Because of the tentacles, I had no room for any extremities. He still looks cute, albeit quadriplegic. I used Vanna's Choice scarlet and cranberry with a 3.5mm hook to make him extra teeny.

Here is a slideshow of him:

I'll be making a cuddly one for myself soon, I already have the perfect yarn. I'll be sure to post pics when I complete him. SO EXCITED

I'm going to use it for my concraft at Marcon this weekend, and I will definitely be taking pics I will share soon.

kapgar said...

That is awesome on more levels than I can count. I only wish I knew how to crochet.

Sursi said...

Do you know about how much yarn you used for the body? I want to use a different yarn than you did and wonder whether I might need 2 skeins.

amber said...

Hi Sursi, I used one skein of Vanna's Choice which is 3.5 oz (100 g), 170 yards (156 m) and there was still some left over when I was finished. Not sure exactly how much is left, but I'd say about 1/4 of a skein, maybe a little less. Hope that helps you in deciding how much you'll need.

I just finished one! It's a father's day present for my dad.

Hi!
I would like to try making a cuddly Cthulhu, but where I live there is no such thing as a 3.75 mm crochet hook, it goes straight from 3.5mm to 4mm. Which one would you recommend?

amber said...

Hi E., I don't think there's really a right or wrong answer as to which hook you use. To some degree it's going to depend on the thickness (weight) of the yarn you choose. If it's a really thick yarn I would go with the 4.0 hook, if it's a thinner yarn I would use the 3.5.

Because the cthulhu is going to be stuffed you want to make sure that when it's finished there aren't large holes between the stitches that the stuffing can poke through. Try using 3.5 and if it's too tight or hard to stitch then move up to the 4.0.

Good luck, and I'm glad you liked the pattern.

Your pattern was a most serendipitous find. I needed a pattern for something to bring to a 4-year-old with an extremely keen and mischievous mind. His parents were hosting my husband and I during his band's short tour. What better way to thank people who are also avid parents than to give their kid something special. Especially when that kid suffers from a fatal disorder like Type 1 Spinal Muscular Atrophy. The kid is awesome in so many ways and a HUGE sci-fi fan. When given his new crocheted-by-me Cthulu, he said, "I love it." A rare statement from a toddler. Thank you SOOOOOO much for making this gift possible and allowing me to give Cal (the kid) a little bit of joy. Here is a link to this crazy creature I made from your wonderful pattern.

I have a question about Cthulhu's tentacles. The round starts off with 24 stitches, but after I do the tentacles, instead of six stitches being left to crochet, there are four. Yours also look more clustered together, and mine feel wide spaced. when I hold the head up, tentacles facing, the first and last tentacle start to go off screen. any idea what I might be doing wrong? Thankies. :)

Kami said...

To the anonymous person :)
sometimes I find that if I have too few stitches it's because I have accidentally skipped a space. So when I read your post I thought maybe counting your stitches and the tentacles will give you how many stitches you actually have and that might be the answer you are looking for. Did that make no sense? I hope that I didn't just confuse you.

Anonymous said...

It did help. I figured it out. Now I'm on the wings, and I must say I'm having a hard time. I'm following the tutorial for the smaller wings. Unless the pattern is expecting you to crochet in the chain one at the start of the row, the number count for each row after the first is off by one. for instance, it says " Ch 1, 6 sc, Ch 6 turn. Skip first ch 3 sc on chain, Hdc to end of row. Ch 1, turn. 6 sc." You can't have six sc in the last line I wrote, because you skipped a chain at the beginning. so either the number to sc should be 5 or the starting chain should be 7. I think it's seven, because the tutorial shows it increasing by one.

amber said...

Hi Anonymous,

Sorry, I know the wings can be confusing. In regards to the first line you've written that it says, "Ch 1, 6 sc, Ch 6 turn. Skip first ch 3 sc on chain, Hdc to end of row. Ch 1, turn. 6 sc.". That 6 sc at the end isn't telling you how many sc you have in the section you've just done, it's telling that after you've turned you need to make 6 sc again.

Also remember that punctuation can seriously affect how a pattern is interpreted. The first part actually reads, "Ch 1, turn. 6 sc, ch 6. turn. skip first ch, 3 sc on chain, hdc to end of row. Ch1, turn. 6 sc." That comma between first ch and 3 sc, shows that you're only to skip the first ch, without the comma it looks like you should be skipping 3 chains.

Hope this helps you out a bit. If not, feel free to post another comment or contact me via the email address in the top left corner of the blog.

Jenn said...

Hello! I came across this pattern looking for christmas ideas for my son. I love it! But I'm having a slight problem. The last row of the body has 9 hdc and then "ends". Which way does that section attach to the head? I tried looking at your pictures but it didn't help me really. Does it attach at the front under the tentacles or to the bottom of the back of the head? Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful pattern!

amber said...

Hi Jenn, the part of the body with the 9 hdc should attach at the back of the head. The 9 hdc sort of make the body piece fit more tightly against the head than if you just finished the last row off with single crochet.

However, my general rule in stitching together amigurumis is whatever looks best is right. Feel free to twist the head around the body and stitch it on where ever you feel it looks best.

Hope that helps, and happy holidays!

Yes that helps alot! Thank you! My daughter saw what i was making her brother the other day and was mighty jealous....guess my next one will be in shades of pink. =)

Hi Ashley, Unfortunately I don't have the equipment or the time I would need to make a video tutorial for the wings. The best I can offer you is this picture tutorial for making the wings to my Tiny Cthulhu pattern. They are slightly smaller, but will get you on the right track for making these wings.

You are also welcome to email me at the address you see in the top left corner of the blog, if you have some specific questions about that instructions. I'll do my best to help you out.

Hi! I'm sorry to bother, but I was wondering if you could tell me what 'st', 'sl','ch','sc' and the others abbrevs means, I don't speak english very well, and I would understand de abbreviatures much less, and I really wanna make this Cthulu. I'm not asking you to translate, I just need to know short for what they are...
Sorry for bothering, I expect your answer, and thank you ahead. :)

amber said...

Hi Constanza, Hopefully this will help:

ch = chain
st = stitch
sc = single crochet
sl = slip (usually I write sl st, which = slip stitch)

Have fun crocheting!!

Hello! I absolutely love your blog. I just have a few questions on how to make this cuddly cthulu:

1. When I started to make his head, he started to look a bit pointy on top, was that just because I hadn't stuffed him yet?
2. How do you make his tentacles twisty and curly-looking like that? I read the pattern but I don't quite understand how to put paper to action on that part.
Any tips will be greatly helpful!
Thank you!

Rob said...

I've posted a pic of my first attempt at a Crochet Cthulhu on my blog. Had a few teething troubles, as I am new to amigurumi, but am pleased with the results. I like the buttons I found for eyes (though do wish I'd got them level).

@Anonymous - the curl in the tentacles is something that just seems to happen to a single row of crochet on a base chain. As for the pointiness of the head, are you finding any difficulty with the magic ring? And are increasing at the correct rate?

Malinda said...

Question

RND 12: *sc in first 2 st, dec over next 2*, repeat around (36 stitches)
does this make 3 st or 2? (3 one for dec and 2 for sc?, or 2 dec tied with 1 sc + 1sc)

Hope that made sence. I am still a bit new to formal pattern reading. :D I think the way I did it before halved the stitches which seems wrong. (Does math)

amber said...

Hi Malinda, It should be 3 stitches. sc, sc, 1 dec. It just says "dec over next 2" meaning you grab the next two stitches and decrease them into one. Hope that helps you out.

Good luck with the pattern and feel free to post a link or send me a pic when you finish. I'd love to see how it turns out.

Just a quick question, I am making the legs for my cthulu, and was wondering if Round 7 should be sc in the next 2 sc, dec to leave you with 12 stitches, rather than decreasing every other stitch from 18, which would leave me with 9?

I've inspired myself in this pattern (to be honest, I started intending to follow it and then started improvising while looking at your photos...) to make a cthulhu for my partner and father or my son for Father's Day.

Thank you for sharing your creations with us!

Hi, Amber. I decided to make a Cthulu for a friend of mine and to keep myself from losing my mind with boredom. It worked and was a very fun project. I was kinda stuck in the middle of nowhere and broke so I used what I had and made felt eyes and wings later.
Thank you for providing the pattern. It's really a nifty little creature.
There are some (rather low quality)pictures here.

Hi, thank you so much for posting this pattern. I absolutely adore it. I'm making my third now to give away 'cause people love it when they see it and want one.

Have you ever considered making an even bigger one? I'd love to make one:)

I don't understand the wings AT ALL. It's the only part I have left to do. :'( The part where you ch 6, turn, skip first ch, 3 sc on ch, hdc to end row - loses me. If you're ch-ing 6, skip one (5), then do 3 sc on it, that means there are 2 left. So how do you do a hdc to end that row??

The pattern is really good, thanks!

It was a gift for my husband, he really liked the gift. :)

I started this Cthulhu yesterday. I'm actually and literally fighting with the head, but there is still progress. I just wondered: Would you make a tutorial especially for tentacles? I don't really get how it's done and mine don't turn out curly like in the photos.

Hello, I wanted to say that I made this wonderful pattern but I modded it some. I gave him more tentacles and a top hat with goggles as well as a vest and a monocle. I would love to send you a picture of my gentlemanly steampunk cthulhu I just am not sure how.

I don't remember if I even remembered the heart but if so I used a button. I have found both two- hole and shank style in multiple sizes and colors. The project was fun & was for my adult daughter. She said the pink was just wrong so she got green.

Hi Amber! My name is Amber too! LOL
I just finished my cthulhu and I couldn't be happier! I'm going to try to find those brads for the "love" heart on his butt but I think he's great as is! Thank you for making this available to the internet world! As soon as I can take a picture, I'll post it here!

Thank you for this pattern! I've made two in the last week of gifts. I added some metallic thread edging along his wings to help the stand out.

Hello! I love this pattern! I'm trying to make it for an anniversary/Valentine's present for my boyfriend, who got me started reading Lovecraft.
I'm having some trouble figuring out how the head attaches to the body? The last row of the head is 6 stitches, but the last row of the body is 18 stitches. So it's not just whipstitched together with the stitches on each piece's end rows lining up... I saw where you answered another question that the 9 hdc should be placed in the back of the head. So, my understanding is that the body will overlap some of the head?
I was thinking that a couple of the stitches on the last row of both the head and body could be sewn together in front, and then just sort of wing it with the back of the body overlapping a bit of the back of the head... So that way, the more bulbous part of the head tilts backward a bit. Is that how you did it? Hope that all makes sense.

Hi! Thank you for sharing this great pattern for free :) I made two Great Old Ones - the green one is mine and the pink one is for my friend. These are my first 3D crochet works ever!

I love this pattern. I made a green Cthulu for my little brother for his apartment and am currently working on number two. This Cthulu will have graduation cap for my step-son.

Love the pattern. I'm a beginner and am finding it easy to follow... just finding it hard to count the rounds but I'll pick it up. How did you do the tentacles for his mouth?

Hello,
Thanks a lot for this pattern : it's just awesome !
And it's almost alive : After making the tentacles, it was impossible to continue : they grabbed hold the hook…

The Thing of the idols, the green, sticky spawn of the stars, had awaked to claim his own

Being a hooking boy is not always easy, but thanks to this pattern, my friends that know Lovecraft do respect me now.

P.S.
Sorry for this bad English : French are not known for their language skills

Do you have to crochet the tentacles on it as you go? I found that confusing!

Anonymous said...

Yes you do when you get to that part you'll do the chain and then you'll do the single crochets in the chain back up to the Baseline that you started with and then do the next chain and repeat until you have all of the tentacles completed before finishing off the Base round (I'm REALLY new so hope that helps)

I am REALLY new at crocheting in general bit have so far (I think) been doing alright with this pattern however the wings is really messing with me I've gone to the link for the tutorial on the tiny cthulhu and found that that didn't particularly help much is there anywhere that I can watch a video on how the wings for this is done?
