Firefly Character Cross Stitch!

I promise I will write out my patterns for these characters and post them soon. For now, I'm just so pleased with how this turned out that I had to share some pictures. Inspired by Needle Noodles Creepy Cute Cross Stitch, Lego Star Wars (could you imagine if there was a Lego Firefly, wouldn't that be amazing?) and this Jayne's Hat cross stitch I decided to try my hand at creating some Firefly related cross stitches. I spent last week creating the character designs and then much of the last seven days stitching it all together. The lettering was borrowed from 2001 Cross Stitch Designs, with some modifications (I really don't know why that book doesn't believe in half stitches.).

This piece is going to be donated to the B.C. Browncoats for the silent auction they'll be holding during this year's Can't Stop the Serenity screening, where proceeds go to Joss Whedon's favourite charity, Equality Now.

And now on to more pictures. Please feel free to offer some feedback, I'm still thinking of tweaking the designs a bit before I make final copies. I realize Mal is missing a row, making him a bit shorter than everyone else. Must fix that. Anyways, I'd love to hear what others think...

**Update: My cross stitch patterns for the men and women of Firefly have now been posted. Enjoy!

OMFG Squeeeee!

Let me be the first to say SHINEY! :) I especially love the Jayne and Kaylee.

I do think Kaylee needs a "patch" on her jumpsuit, like the teddy bear one she has - not sure how well that would work in this scale, but she needs that splash of whimsy.

Maybe stitch on a free floating necklace for Zoe, kind of 3d-ish, if you get my aim?

I'd love to do them on individual projects.

ZOMG! Love!

Jayne is perfect. I like Skulleigh's idea of the patch. But yeah, such small scale would be hard.

I think I would glitz up Inara a bit more. Maybe carry and irridescent thread with her dress color. Maybe a pattern on the dress itself in gold. Make her look expensive.

And Wash is so perfect too. The colors on his shirt are great. Oh I can't wait until you release this pattern.

And yes, Lego Serenity would be amazing.

Thanks for the compliments and feedback everyone!

Skulleigh, I agree that Kaylee could be more whimsical. I don't think I could cross stitch a bear patch at this size. Each character is only about 1 inch wide. Maybe a small bear charm or sticker could be sewn on to her jumpsuit after it was stitched? I'll have to keep my eyes open for something that would work when I'm in the craft stores.

Zoe actually has the black cord necklace that she wears in most of the episodes. If you click on one of the pictures it will enlarge to full screen size and then maybe it will be more visible.

Deeners,

I'm glad you liked Wash. He's the one I was most worried about making recognizable. It's not easy cross stitching a Hawaiian shirt:) I agree that Innara needs more glitz. When I stitch her again I'll play around with some Krenik or other sparkly threads and see what I can come up with.

Thanks everyone,
amber

Amber,

I just loved this pattern. Some girlfriends and I have a Whedon Weekend, every year...Well, this was our second annual. We do round table discussions and themed meals...you know the drill. Well, I do the award for the "nerdiest" Whedonite for the weekend. I hope you don't mind that I made this amazing cross stitch for the award, this year. It was a hit!!! Great job!!

Thanks,
Amber :D

Hi Amber, you're Whedon weekend sounds awesome. Tell us more about these themed meals, I'm always trying to come up with good food for when my friends and I have a marathon of Buffy, Angel, Firefly or Dollhouse.

And I don't mind at all that you used this pattern for a prize. The patterns are here to be used. I hope the prize winner was happy, as I know exactly how much time and effort you put into making this piece for your friend. Thanks for sharing!
