I've received a few comments from people who have trouble figuring out the wing instructions in the Tiny Cthulhu pattern. Since I'm making another one of these myself right now I figured I could photograph the process as I went.
Here again are the full instructions for the Tiny Cthulhu wing piece. Along with each photo, I've reprinted the instruction describing what is done in that picture. For those that are curious, I'm making my wing with a size F (3.75mm) crochet hook and the yarn is Loops & Threads Impeccable Worsted Weight in Luxury Ombre.
Wings (make two)
Ch 4. Turn and do 1 sc in each of next 3 ch sps. Ch 1, turn. 3 sc, ch 4. turn. 3 sc on chain, 3 hdc on the three sc. Ch1, turn. 3 sc, ch 5, 4 sc in chain, 3 hdc. Ch1, turn. 4 sc, ch 6, 5 sc in chain, 4 hdc. Ch 3 *Work appox. 8 dc along the top edge of the wing (opposite the pointy bits). Sl St into first Ch, or near first Ch. Fasten off.
Pic 1: Ch 4. Turn and do 1 sc in each of next 3 ch sps (skip chain closest to hook).
Pic 2: Ch 1, turn. 3 sc, ch 4. turn
Pic 3: 3 sc on chain (skip chain closest to hook), 3 hdc on the three sc. Ch1, turn.
Pic 4: 3 sc, ch 5, (skip chain closest to the hook) 4 sc in chain, 3 hdc. Ch1, turn.
Pic 5: 4 sc, ch 6, 5 sc in chain (skip chain closest to hook), 4 hdc. Ch 3
Pic 6: *Work appox. 8 dc along the top edge of the wing (opposite the pointy bits). At this point, I've only crocheted the first four double crochet stitches so you can see where they should go.
Pic 7: Sl St into first Ch, or near first Ch. Fasten off.
Now just make a second wing following these instructions and attach them both to the back of your cthulhu.
Hope this helps clear things up a bit. Post a comment if you have any more questions.
Thanks for the tutorial very much! I just though of how to make a pair of wings to the pegasus and your pattern suits perfectly! ))
ReplyDeleteAluajala, I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful. I think you're right, these wings would be nice for a pegasus. That's what I like about them, they can be used for so many different creatures.
ReplyDeleteGreat tutorial! You saved my cthulhu! Thanks a lot and merry xmas from Sweden!
ReplyDeleteGreat pattern, it's perfect for a wyvern that I'm making! I got a little mixed up on one of the steps, though. At picture 3, after I've sc'd the chain, I only have room for 2 hdc before I come to the end, instead of 3. It affected the other chains as well.
ReplyDeleteJack, are you sure that you have enough chain spaces in your chain before you started single crocheting back across the chain? If so, you may want to take a closer look at the pictures to make sure you're stitching in the right places. I've rechecked the steps and I don't see any errors in the instructions. Hope things work out for you!
ReplyDeleteIf any one else has any suggestions as to why Jack may be running into problems feel free to chime in.
Everything else in your tutorial has been great, got my Cthulhu ready for wings but for some reason I just end up with square chunks joined by a small flap in the corners instead of progressively larger pointy bits. it seems to be whatever I'm doing with the hdc's that's stuffing me up because mine looks like your pics until then but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong with them. Am I supposed to be turning and doing the hdc's on the sc's I just did on the chain? Am I supposed to be doing the hdc's to connect it to the first flap? Any help would be really appreciated, like I said my cthulhu is complete except it's wings.
ReplyDeleteHi Ukhsud, I assume the part you're getting stuck on is the picture #3 instructions, where the hdc begins, is that right? For this row, "Pic 3: 3 sc on chain (skip chain closest to hook), 3 hdc on the three sc. Ch1, turn.", those last 3hc go on the three sc that are from the previous row.
ReplyDeleteWhen you start the Pic. #3 instructions you're hook is at the end of a piece of chain, work 3 sc into the chain (skipping the first chain space), then keep working from right to left (DO NOT TURN) putting the three hdc into the three sc that are to your left (and part of the previous row).
Take a good look at the picture above the Pic. #3 instructions to see where your hook should be at the end of this row. Remember, throughout the tutorial, it's the picture above the text, that is showing what your piece should look like and where your hook should be when you've completed the instructions in that part of text.
Does that make things any clearer? It's hard for me to offer help without seeing your actual piece, but I hope this has clarified things. Let me know, and good luck!
Thanks heaps, that really helped! I've got one wing done now and despite being a *little* loose and deformed it actually resembles yours :) (I think my yarn is a little bit on the poor side and the colouring doesn't help make it easy). Your Cthulhu is the first amigurumi pattern I've taken on since learning to crochet last week and now that I can actually do the wings he'll soon be finished, yay!!! Thanks again for your help and an awesomely cool pattern!
ReplyDeleteHi Ukhsud, I'm glad my advice helped! If you can post a jpeg of your finished cthulhu somewhere, please send me the link. I'd love to see how it turned out. I'm glad the pattern wasn't too frustrating a first project for you. Thanks for commenting!
ReplyDeleteI completed one and am progressing on a second. Here's a link to my blog where I've posted a couple of pictures...

This is a GREAT tutorial!! thanks very much, it helped as it was very difficult finding a good tutorial for wings! I needed them for a little dragon i'm making and they r perfect, thanks again! =)
ReplyDeleteThanks, the pictures really do help. I found the written instructions a little confusing for these 2 reasons (perhaps Jack is having trouble with the 2nd):
ReplyDelete1. You don't always specify turning after the long chains (just the first one), but I figured I should stay consistent with the first spiky bit.
2. It's not clear whether the turning chain (ch 1, turn) is supposed to be one of the sc's of its row. (Have you ever used a pattern that worked that way? If not, I don't know how to explain it.) The pics made it clear that it's not supposed to be, but without them, Jack may be skipping the first hdc when sc'ing across, and on his way back not working into the ch, which would leave him without enough room to make 3 hdc's. (Hope that all made sense.)
Anyway, thanks again.
Awesome pattern, thank you for posting! Used it for MarjorieCrochet's baby snow dragon pattern.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI'm new to crocheting and I seem to be having a decent amount of trouble with the wings. I'm going to try and work on it more but I'd greatly appreciate if someone could post a video of them crocheting it.
Thanks,
Christina :)
Thank you, I have made two of them!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this pattern. I'm making Flash slippers for a friend, and needed the little wings for the back ... perfect size and everything!! :)
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! I did a freehand Cthulu and couldn't figure the wings out, so this helped immensely! Fankoooooooo!
ReplyDeleteAnyone have a video tutorial? I've read through the comments multiple times and it's not looking like the picture.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Got it! It's like you have to work backward after you chain. (at least that's how I ended up doing it.) :)
ReplyDeleteWhat brand of yarn are you using (in the pictures)? It's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI found the tutorial and have made the wings! Thanks for the pattern and the tutorial. That helped a lot!
ReplyDeleteAwesome wings pattern. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteWonderful pattern. I modified it a bit for a little bit of a larger Cthulhu

I hope you don't mind too much, I'm saving these pics so I can reverse them and get a better view as a left handed crafter. As good as my imagination is, flipping images from rightie to leftie seems beyond me!
ReplyDeleteI took a little bit of creative license with mine, I added 3 extra tentacles below the 5 original, (added a couple extra rows as well so that they would work alright) and then I stitched the bottom ones down to the body so that it looked more like the epic god Cthulhu to me. I am still struggling with the wings, But I am going to keep trying. Thanks for such an awesome pattern.
