Tiny Cthulhu! Free Pattern

Here is the pattern for the Tiny Cthulhu that I sent off to Australia. As always, if you have any questions about the pattern or notice any problems with it please contact me through the comments section. I love to see pictures of the things people make with my patterns so if you make a Tiny Cthulhu and post it online, send me a link.

*New: Are you looking for the Baby Cthulhu with legs? Read here.

Tiny Cthulhu Pattern

Note: To make the Cthulhu with a shirt on switch to your shirt colour on RND 17 of the body and then back your main colour at RND 26. For the arms switch to your shirt colour at RND 3 on each arm. If you want a bare Cthulhu just make the whole thing in one colour.

I highly recommend using the Invisible Decrease method when you get to the decrease rounds of the pattern.

Materials

1 skein of worsted weight yarn (the colour is your choice, but Cthulhus are traditionally green). You’ll need about 1/2 or less of a second colour for the shirt if you want a shirt.
two 12mm safety eyes (for Cthulhus I really like the cat’s eyes)
fiber fill or stuffing of your choice
size F (3.75mm) crochet hook

Special Stitches

In the pattern I’m going to call the Cthulhu’s tentacles a coil. When you see coil, do this:

coil: chain 9, 3 sc in third chain space from hook, 3 sc in each of next six spaces.

If you find the chain spaces too small to work 3 single crochets in, try making the chain with a hook that’s one size larger.

Head and Body (worked as one piece, starting with head)

6 sc in a magic ring
RND 1: work 2 sc in each st around. (12 stitches)
RND 2: *sc in first st, 2 sc in next st*, repeat around (18 stitches)
RND 3: *sc in first 2 st, 2 sc in next st*, repeat around (24 stitches)
RND 4: *sc in first 3 st, 2 sc in next st*, repeat around (30 stitches)
RND 5: *sc in first 4 st, 2 sc in next st*, repeat around (36 stitches)
RND 6: *sc in first 5 st, 2 sc in next st*, repeat around (42 stitches)
For RNDs 7-9 sc into each st around (42 stitches)
RND 10: (tentacle round!) sc in first 17 st, *coil, sc in next 2 st* repeat 5 times (so you have five tentacles), sc in each st to end of round. (42 stitches)
RND 11: sc in each st around (42 stitches) Note: If you have less than 42 that’s okay because we’re about to start decreasing, if you have more than 42 go back and try to fix the problem.
RND 12: *sc in first 5 st, dec in next st,* repeat around (36 stitches)
RND 13: *sc in first 4 st, dec in next st,* repeat around (30 stitches)
RND 14: *sc in first 3 st, dec in next st,* repeat around (24 stitches)
place safety eyes, using photos as a guide.
RND 15: *sc in first 2 st, dec in next st,* repeat around (18 stitches)
RND 16: *sc in first st, dec in next st* repeat around (12 stitches)
If you’re Cthulhu is going to have a shirt, switch to shirt colour for the next round.
RND: 17: *sc in first st, 2 sc in next st*, repeat around (18 stitches)
RND 18: *sc in first 2 st, 2 sc in next st*, repeat around (24 stitches)
RND 19: *sc in first 3 st, 2 sc in next st*, repeat around (30 stitches)
RND 20: *sc in first 4 st, 2 sc in next st*, repeat around (36 stitches)
RND 21: *sc in first 5 st, 2 sc in next st*, repeat around (42 stitches)
For RNDs 22-25 sc into each st around (42 stitches)
end shirt by switching back to main colour for next round
RND 26: *sc in first 5 st, dec in next st,* repeat around (36 stitches)
Stuff head section to desired firmness now.
RND 27: *sc in first 4 st, dec in next st,* repeat around (30 stitches)
RND 28: *sc in first 3 st, dec in next st,* repeat around (24 stitches)
RND 29: in back loop only *sc in first 2 st, dec in next st,* repeat around (18 stitches)
RND 30: *sc in first st, dec in next st,* repeat around. (12 stitches)
Stuff body to desired firmness.
RND 31: dec in each st around. (6 stitches)
Finish off, weave end through last six stitches and pull closed, fasten off and hide end inside body.

Arms (make 2)

4 sc in magic ring
RND 1: work 2 sc in each st around (8 stitches)
RND 2: *sc in first st, 2 sc in next st*, repeat around (12 stitches)
switch to shirt colour for next round, if making a shirt.
RNDs 3-5: sc in each st around (12 stitches)
sl st into next stitch, finish off leaving long tail for sewing.

Wings (make two)

Some people have found the instructions for the wings a bit confusing, so I've made a visual tutorial explaining how they're made.

Ch 4. Turn and do 1 sc in each of next 3 ch sps. Ch 1, turn. 3 sc, ch 4. turn. 3 sc on chain, 3 hdc on the three sc. Ch1, turn. 3 sc, ch 5, 4 sc in chain, 3 hdc. Ch1, turn. 4 sc, ch 6, 5 sc in chain, 4 hdc. Ch 3 *Work appox. 8 dc along the top edge of the wing (opposite the pointy bits). Sl St into first Ch, or near first Ch. Fasten off.

Assembly

Stuff arms and attach to body. Attach wings to centre of back. Hide loose ends inside body.

Enjoy!

  11. Nice cthulhu! We are writing an article about oddball knitting on our blog, www.darkroastedblend.com. Can we use your image and link back to your site?

  12. I just started crocheting the cthulhu, but I'm using a size H hook and thicker yarn, so I was wondering if I should do more crochets on the head before I do the tentacles since when I got to the 9th row, it seemed kind of short.... oh, and I'm kind of a beginner >.<

    ReplyDelete
  13. Lizzy, I think you should probably still put the tentacles on the 9th row. If you're using a bigger hook and thicker yarn then your cthulhu will probably come out bigger than mine, but proportionally things should still be in the same places.

  14. Hi Amber, I'm a knitter and a Lovecraft fan, so for me this tiny cthulhu is a tentacles-down winner! I came across it in DarkRoastedBlend.com.

I hope you don't mind that I linked to you in my blog. Didn't post the photo though, I wanted my friends to be astounded by the creativity :)

  19. Hi there! I love your pattern, I think though I messed up a bit mine came out okay. I used sport weight yarn and an F hook. He came out so skinny, I decided to add legs to get him semi sitting, ,also added another line to the wings. Here he is, going to try another soon and go slower so I get it more like yours :). 22. I've made a few variations on this pattern for friends now. I found I prefer longer tentacles, a couple of extra rounds to the body, slight extension to the wings and the addittion of hair.

I just *had* to make one of these little guys!

Being an H.P. Lovecraft fan, plus an avid roleplayer, this little guy is my best pal!

    Here's the finished result:

    My C'thulu Buddy

Now, my roommate's daughter wants one due to 'Prank Calls of C'thulu' -- she even wants him to wear a small telephone earplug!

Again - thanks for this awesome pattern! (Any plans to do any other Lovecraftian creatures?)

  27. I had a lot of trouble with the wings at first, too. I was able to make them look passable (though not as cute as the example pics) by turning my work at the end of each long chain.

  31. Mine always comes out with the tentacles upside down. What am I doing wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Jasmine, that's a strange problem. Could you take a picture of your Cthulhu and send me a link so I can see what you mean? Can you just bend or twist the tentacles so that they are pointing downward? If not, my only guess is that maybe you are putting a set of 3 single crochets too close to the base of the head. Maybe try leaving the two chain spaces closest to the head with just a single crochet or a slip stitch.

    ReplyDelete
  33. while I absolutely LOVE this pattern (mine is about halfway done...have to go buy polyfil..lol) it's a bit difficult to work as a lefty. The decreasing stitch is really difficult for me to maneuver. All I can guess is because everything I crochet is backwards. This is my first amigurumi / crochet-critter and I wasn't expecting being a lefty to be such an issue. I'm also having issues with my abnormally-tight stitching. I used one size larger needle than you recommended, and they're still a tight squeeze. I will post pics when mine is done.

  49. Hey there, I completed my Cthulhu a few months ago, here he is:

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v214/koeniou/cthulu002.jpg

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v214/koeniou/cthulu003.jpg

It was the first crochet project that I ever completed - I learnt to crochet the previous day and decided that I might as well practice in a fun way. He's by no means perfect since my technique isn't very good, and I apparently forgot how to count at some point. I posted about it on my blog http://koeniou.wordpress.com/2010/01/13/completed-crafts-2009/ if curious.

I love this little guy, and he proudly sits in front of our TV with our Mario plushies. My housemates and I call him 'the happiest little Cthulhu' since it looks like he is reaching up for a hug.

I think I'm going to make a few more whenever I have completely inappropriate yarn on hand (I'm eyeing off some pink sparkly stuff at the moment).

    Love this pattern!

  53. Hi, I was wondering if it would be alright to make Cthulhus from your pattern and then sell them for profit?

I'm asking because I believe someone on deviantart may be doing this and I wouldn't want anyone to unfairly profit from your awesome free pattern.

    Thanks!

  54. Thank you so much for sharing this amazing pattern! I made a Tiny Cthulhu and you can see it here: http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/5711/fbdsc02089.jpg

I'm so in love with it that I started a giant Cthulhu so I took all the measurements and multiplied them by 2. I've started with the head and I'm at the tentacle round but the top of the head looks like a beret or a chubby pancake... Is it really a question of just doubling the measurements or should I do some more adjustments and add lines of sc in between increasing lines? Any help is appreciated ;o)

    Take care,

    Eva

    ReplyDelete
  55. fallingjewel, all my patterns are free, no strings attached. People are welcome to do whatever they want with them. I hate to make the same item over and over again, which is why I'm not in the business of selling my finished products. If others want to sell stuff using these patterns, I say good luck to them and admire their patience in being willing to stitch the same piece over and over again.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Eva, I'm not quite sure what you mean by "taking all the measurements and multiplying them by two." Do you mean that instead of having 12 stitches in the first round you have 24, etc? If so, then I think that would cause a beret look.

Instead what you'd want to do is create more rows and double the centre points. For the head, continue adding six new stitches each round, but instead of adding the tentacles when you get to the row with 42 stitches, you'd want to put tentacles on when you get to the row with 84 stitches. Does that make sense?

Also, any time you're repeating the same number of stitches for a few rows (see Rnd 22-25) I would double the number of times you're doing it. So on the body, wait until you're at 84 stitches in the round, then do not 4, but 8 rnds where you keep the stitch count at 84.

I hope that explanation makes sense. If not, feel free to post more questions. Good luck.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hi Amber, this is exactly what I meant. Not doubling the number of stitches per round but increasing the number of rounds by adding 6 new stitches the round. So I would always start with a magic ring with 6 stitches, then 12, then 18... I started my tentacles when I had 72 stitches and it does look a whole lot less like a beret! Thank you for your help!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Eva, I'm glad it's working out. Feel free to post a link to the pic when you're done. I'd love to see what a large 'Tiny Cthulhu' looks like!

  60. As promised, here's a picture of my big Cthulhu next to the little one. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it completely because somehow the proportions between the body and the head weren't really respected and the Cthulhu ended up having a big head and a slim body so I undid the body and kept the head as it was as it still looks terrifying!...

  68. Hi Sabrina, I'm glad you like the pattern and welcome to the fun world of crochet! Unfortunately I don't have the technology or the time to make tutorial videos for my patterns. You might want to try these tutorials, The Yellow Ball Part 1 and Part 2, to get down the basic idea of how to make amigurumi. As well, when I was first starting out Debbie Stoller's Stitch 'N Bitch: The Happy Hooker was my learning guide. It taught me how to make all the basic stitches and how to read patterns.

    Good luck and happy stitching!

  71. Hi,

Thank you for this cute pattern ! I'm a big fan of HP Lovecraft so I learned how to crochet to do it. Your instructions are clear and the tuto for the wings is useful. I made three of them, one with your original pattern, one smaller with arms and legs and a smaller one with a head decoration. Here they are :

I just saw the new pattern for the cthulhu wuth legs. Its' so cute too ! I'm gonna try it !
    Thank you again,

  90. Take a look at this and newer! I love it!! :D

Only thing that bothers me though, is that my coils are so tight compared to yours... How can i un-tighten the coils?

  91. I should of course not forget to post the actual link...

  92. @Pinky

Your project looks awesome! If you loosen your stitches, you'll loosen the coils. If you have difficulties doing that, you could just make the coils longer.

    ReplyDelete
  93. @Pinky

Try steaming the coils. If you make tea, let your water boil and hold Cthulhu over the pot face first, that's what I had to do and it worked great. You can also do it more then once after it dries if you want even looser.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Wow, that's awesome. I never would have thought to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Hmm... I'll try it when i boil water again! Thanks for the advice and the compliment ^^

    ReplyDelete
  96. Heh, I just pulled kinda hard on the coils, and it seems that already worked.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I'm making a tiny, tiny cthulhu for another friend now... My hands hurt!

    check it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinkycrochet/6172790615/

it's about 1 cm tall so far, and i'm wondering how i can make the arms, with only 4 stitches to start with... It was a pain to get the 6 stitches together for the head/body

    ReplyDelete
  98. I really want to thank you for this. My friend loves Cthulhu so she's getting this for christmas. And now that my boyfriend has seen the one I've made he wants one.
I have changed the pattern just a little by altering the length of the tentacles by chaining 9,12,15,12,9.

    ReplyDelete
  99. It's completed!!! Look at it, it's absolutely tiny! solved the arm problem by starting with 6 stitches, increasing to 12 in the next round and crocheting 2 more rounds to complete them.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Well, for my second Amigurumi project ever, I did this awesome Cthulhu for my husband. (I did a hybrid of the two patterns). I was trying to keep it a secret while I was making it, but I was so excited how well the wings turned out, that he guess what I was making when I showed him one. He was extremely excited! LOL

Anyway, here is our little Cthulhu, already showing the other stuffies who's boss. http://instagr.am/p/QJgGt/?ref=nf

  101. I have finished the head :D I was so excited to start this project (it's my first amigurumi and my 3rd crochet ever) I posted a link to your pattern on my blog when I posted the pics of my Cthulu. Thank you so much for the amazing pattern!

  102. oh! i did 6 tentacles with ch20, 2hdc across, hdc, slst, repeat... and the eyes are just ordinary everyday buttons from a sewing kit... Also, I somehow turned my head inside out before I stuffed it? i kinda like the look of that better...

    ReplyDelete
  103. This is a great pattern, I had some trouble with all the abbreveations (never crocheted after an english pattern, for it isn't my first language) but my cthulu turned out just wonderful :D

I added two legs (crocheted two more 'arms') and made the tentacle coils longer. Hope you like it:

  119. I have made this a few times using the arms for legs. Gave one a Hello Kitty shirt for a friend and a Mighty Mouse dressed one for another. About to start a Madonna themed/dressed for a b-day gift.

  120. LOVE! I want to make this as a christmas ornament for my husband. How big is your finished product? Wondering so I can adjust yarn/hook to get my desired size. Thanks so much!

    ReplyDelete
  121. Rebecca, I've actually made one with crochet thread! It came out small-ornament size, if that helps you. I used #10 thread, and a Size 7 steel hook. Embroidered eyes on.

    ReplyDelete
  122. I made a new version of this, without the arms and with two rows of tentacles instead of one (the bottom row is just a chain, with a single crochet in each stitch, for longer curlier tentacles). Thanks so much for giving this pattern to the world; I never would have thought of crocheting Cthulhu without you!

    ReplyDelete
  123. Hey. I used your pattern and made my very first plushie. It's not perfect, but I learned a lot a new techniques making this. Mine turned out a lot bigger since I used some camo red heart yarn I had laying around and I had to used a G hook. I think I'll make the tentacles longer for my second one because this one looks more like a mustache. I named him Jamie because of that. You can see him here: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10100119687996310.2269874.21908025&type=3

  126. Hey,

Thanks for the great pattern. It inspired me to change it a bit - so mine has a zipper in his back and the body is not stuffed (the head is closed inside with a crochet disk to keep the filling where it belongs).

My daughter is chortling with glee over her Tiny Cthulhu dolls. I think they will be decorating her Christmas tree with them. Or releasing them for world domination, whichever comes first.
My dolls have the round hand, then a flat triangle for the arms. I embroidered white yarn eyes with red pupils, because Cthulhu! And 'tis the season, so they have Christmas sweaters. My husband says it looks like a octopus swallowing Charlie Brown.

    Here's how they are evolving.
